Rip rap can be used for armor shorelines, streambeds, pilings, and other abutments.

Rip rap is a very useful type of broken stone that can be utilized for a number of purposes. It is also called riprap, rip-rap, rock armour, rubble, or shot rock. The main uses for riprap are to armor shorelines, streambeds, pilings, bridge abutments, and other shoreline structures in order to protect against erosion. It can also be used on steep graded hills to prevent erosion due to weather.

How to Use Riprap

There are various sizes of rip rap available for different uses. Smaller riprap stones, in the 4- to 5-inch range, are great for driveways and parking lots. The medium size stones, which are 6 to 9 inches, work great along the shores of lakes, streams, and rivers. This size can be difficult to walk on, so it makes an excellent deterrent for people walking where they shouldn’t be. Large riprap stones are about 9 inches and are primarily used in large ditches and along banks that have already begun to erode.

For best results, use a rip rap mixture that has a variety of stone sizes, rather than one uniform size. You want a durable type of stone, such as granite. A filter material should be used to prevent the underlying soil from migrating upwards through the rip rap. Rip rap does require an enclosure to keep it in place, especially when installed on steep slopes or areas with rapidly flowing water. Chain link or wire mesh works quite well.
